Quartz Reef

Good news from the Adelong Quartz Reef. From authentic sources we
derive gratifying information of the success of the quartz crushing
operations at Adelong a partial of quartz from Ryan's claim, being the
poorest in his heap turned out 7 ozs to the ton; a
mixed lot of quartz from Bakers claim turned out from 12 ozs
to 16 ozs per ton. When it is remembered that 3 ozs to the ton
would pay, and that the richest quartz reefs on the Victoria side have hardly
exceeded 7 ozs to the ton, it will be seen that the
results of the working of the Adelong Reef are in the highest degree
satisfactory. We are informed that £100 had been offered for one share in a claim
which, some three months since, was considered valueless or almost so; and
for a small lot of quartz, only a few tons, lying alongside the claim, £35
had been offered. The side of the reef on which the claim in question is situate, had
previously been considered of very little account, and most of the miners had
given up their claims there until the quartz crushing commenced; but since
the crushing machine has tested a few tons, very high prices have been
offered for some of the claims that have been retaken. Goulburn
