Arwon
wins Melbourne Cup 8 November
1978 The Canberra Times |
Arwon, which raced in Canberra early in his
career, scored a courageous win over the fast-finishing New Zealander Dandaleith in the $2,000 Melbourne Cup at Flemington
yesterday. Perfectly
ridden by Harry White, who notched his third Melbourne Cup victory, Arwon lasted to win by a half neck from Dandaleith,
which was capably handled by the 16-year-old New Zealand apprentice Toby Autridge, with a neck to another New Zealander, Karu, ridden by Warwick Robinson. Last home was Massuk, ridden by Gary Murphy. Arwon is owned by Eric, Bob and John Doon,
of Tumut, Richard Wilson and Brian Wakefield, of Canberra, and Jack Watson,
of Nowra. Arwon, bought for $18,000, brought his
stakes earnings to $240,000 from 35starts for 13 wins, 10 seconds and two thirds. |
