Atrocious
murder on the Hume River 12 February 1844 The Sydney Morning
Herald |
January
30. - Intelligence having been received here that an atrocious murder had been
committed on the Hume River. Mr. Commissioner
Bingham proceeded immediately to the spot, accompanied by Surgeon Large,
and a gentleman, whom he was obliged to swear in on account of the
absence of all his police. The
murderer, Henry Atkins, was happily apprehended and lodged in safety in
the Tumut lock-up, from whence he has been committed to Berrima Gaol. The
deceased, John Daly, was a quiet inoffensive person; and the cause of
the cruel deed is not yet certain, but there is a strong suspicion that
it was occasioned by jealousy. |
