The
following are the populations officially given for the municipalities on
the southern and south-western lines:- Goulburn 10,480 Albury 6,700 Wagga 5,400 Hay 3,012 Young 2,800 Cootamundra 2,600 Junee 2,500 Yass, 2,300 Cowra 2,106 Narandera 2,100 Temora 1,600 Tumut 1,538 Gundagai 1,500 Murrumburrah 1,448 Grenfell 950 Wallendbeen 736. Cootamundra
started off scratch about 30 years ago (says the "Herald"), and
since then it has outstripped Cowra, Grenfell, Gundagai, Murrumburrah, Narandera, Tumut and Yass, older towns, and has
almost reached Young in population. During
the past ten years the population of the Municipal District of
Gundagai has increased fifty per cent. In
1895 Tumut had a population of 300 in excess of Gundagai, in 1900
Gundagai led Tumut by a narrow margin, now the positions have been
reversed, the figures being slightly in favor of Tumut. |
