Moonlight Gang Northern Star (Lismore) 20
January 1925 |
The man who raced from Wantabadgery 45 years
ago to tell the Gundagai police about the doings of the Moonlight gang at Wantabadgery is dead. He was Mr. Michael Leary, of Coolamon. Mr.
Leary was born at Gundagai 64 years ago, and he could relate many interesting
experiences of the early days of settlement in the hills. In his young days he was employed as a stock man, and it was he who
rode to Gundagai with the message sent by Sergeant Carroll reporting the
capture of the Moonlight gang of bushrangers. After leaving Wantabadgery he took up land
at Junee, but later sold his property and went to Coolamon, where he selected and made a home. Deceased is
survived by six sons. |
