New Tumut
Shire The Land 27 July
1928 |
The Gadara Shire, which has put up a bigger fight against the spread
of St. John's, Wort probably than any other local
governing body in the State, has entered into a new phase in its history by amalgamating
with the Tumut municipality to form the Tumut Shire. The late shire president, Councillor A. E. Herring, has been elected
president of the new shire, with Councillor James Elphick
as deputy-president. One of the chief problems of the shire is that of electricity supply.
The present Tumut plant is inadequate for the supply of Tumut and Adelong,
and, in addition to local hydro-electric projects, the proposal has been made
to draw a supply from Burrinjuck including rural
lines for the use of dairy and other farmers. |
