Steam Land Carriage Invented Hobart Town
Gazette and Van Diemen’s Land Advertiser 15 March 1823

England - Mr. Griffith has nearly completed his "Patent Land
Carriage," for conveying goods and passengers on our public roads
without the aid of horses! The carriage will be worked by an engine of six horse power, and will
transport, a load of five tons at an average rate of six miles per hour,
which may be varied and increased indefinitely for other carriages. The general introduction of these carriages, for all kinds of
purposes, will constitute a triumph of mechanics never anticipated by our
ancestors. |
